“What were the funniest Super Bowl Commercials?”
Aside from all the talk of the actual game, that is always the first question asked by many the morning after Super Bowl Sunday. Super Bowl commercials are almost as much of an entertainment factor as the game some years. Advertising during the Super Bowl is the pinnacle when it comes to marketing a brand. There is no grander stage to showcase one’s marketing, story telling, or comedic talents. Some commercials absolutely crush, while others are unfortunately flops. One thing is for certain though, the most memorable commercials each year are the ones that make the whole Super Bowl party roar with laughter. After reviewing the game film, we put together our list of the funniest Super Bowl commercials of all-time.
Reebok: Terry Tate Office Linebacker (2003)
Almost twenty years ago Reebok delivered this all-time Super Bowl ad, Terry Tate Office Linebacker. This was a perfect display of incorporating football into everyday office life. This commercial was such a hit that Reebok produced a series of Terry Tate Office Linebacker ads. The original is still the best, and is one of the funniest Super Bowl spots ever. The “Hey Janice” line is perfection as well.
Snickers: Hungry Betty White (2010)
First off, rest in peace to Betty White, a true comedy legend. This Snickers commercial featuring White was an absolute smash hit, pun intended. This ad was so successful it started the Snickers, “You aren’t you, when you are hungry” campaign. They would go on to feature other comedians in funny situations like this.
Bud Light: Slap (2007)
Fist bumps out, slaps are in. Bud Light always brings it on Super Bowl Sunday, and their Slap commercial was one of the best they’ve ever done. A great and funny ending, as the golden rule of slapping is never slap your boss!
Career Builder: Monkeys (2006)
Continuing on the throwbacks, was this gem by Career Builder in 2006. Monkeys in business attire running an office that only has one other human, comedy gold.
Tide: It’s a Tide Ad (2018)
Tide really cleaned up with this hilarious Super Bowl commercial in 2018. David Harbour, from Stranger Things fame stars as the never ending ad perfectly makes fun of other generic ads, making the viewer think its for another product. In the end, like Harbour repeatedly says, “It’s just a Tide Ad”, and a brilliant one at that!
Bud Light: Magic Fridge (2006)
Every guy’s dream came true with Bud Light’s Magic Fridge commercial in 2006. The funniest commercials alway have a twist ending that everyone watching is not expecting. Bud Light crushed it here with their closing scene, with the next neighbors being the beneficiary of this guy’s magic fridge.
Amazon: Before Alexa (2020)
More recently, Amazon delivered this Before Alexa Super Bowl Commercial in 2020. Starring Ellen Degeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, this ad was masterfully done on so many levels. Its a 90 seconds spot, so there was more run time for story telling and clever jokes. It was funny, witty, and most importantly got people asking, “what did we do before Alexa?”.
Bud Light: Post Malone, Inside Post’s Brain (2020)
Bud Light continues to be a mainstay on this list with their Inside Post Malone’s Brain Super Bowl commercial from 2020. What really stands out in this spot is the attention of detail, with funny antidotes all throughout. From the two guys controlling Post’s brain having the same exact tattoos as Post, to the tastebuds absolutely loving the Bug Light seltzer, to the final punchline of “got any pretzels”. This ad did an incredible job of layering jokes for the entire 60 seconds.
